Cellulite, Lipedema & Bioelectrics
A few weeks ago I put a question box in my stories and asked what you all wanted me to cover, and the number one answer by a significant margin was lipedema. So here we go.
Lipedema affects up to 1 in 9 women and it's a connective tissue disorder that's driven by hormonal imbalance, mitochondrial dysfunction, and something almost no protocol is actually talking about, which is bioelectric collapse.
Quick note before we dive in: lipedema can only be diagnosed by a qualified medical professional, usually an endocrinologist, vascular specialist, or trained dermatologist, so please don't diagnose yourself from an Instagram post!
There are stages (stage one being the less severe end), and I was actually diagnosed as stage one in 2021 while seeing an endocrinologist for fertility. My mom has also struggled with lipedema and lymphedema my whole life, so this one is pretty personal for me.
Most lipedema protocols talk about lymph, and some talk about hormones, but almost none of them talk about what actually powers the tissue itself, and that's your bioelectric field. When that breaks down, no amount of drainage, detox, or dieting is going to move the needle in a meaningful way.
In this article I want to break down why estrogen dominance isn't the full story (even though it is a player), why you literally cannot drain tissue that has no charge, how sunlight and circadian rhythm drive fat metabolism at the cellular level, and why most protocols are missing the mitochondrial foundation entirely.
Keep reading for the article!

You’ve definitely heard of cellulite, and you might’ve heard of lipedema. But not many people are talking about what these conditions really are at the root- or why they’re exploding right now. This isn’t just about fat or fluid; it's also about connective tissue that’s lost its charge, mitochondria that can’t keep up, and a light environment that’s potentially short-circuiting your hormonal rhythm. In this article, I’ll break down:
Lipedema Is Estrogen-Driven AND Redox-Compromised Lipedema is estrogen-sensitive, but the issue isn't just "too much estrogen" the way a lot of people frame it. It's really about how well your body is actually detoxing and metabolizing estrogen, and that process is directly tied to your light environment and your mitochondrial redox state. Torres et al. (2021) showed that estrogen directly impacts mitochondrial bioenergetics, and Czeisler (1999) linked circadian timing to hormonal clearance, so we're not just talking theory here. What's often missing from lipedema conversations is that estrogen detox is light- and redox-dependent, that progesterone (which opposes fluid retention) drops with circadian mismatch, and that low mitochondrial charge literally equals low detox capacity. This is why women with poor light environments or compromised mitochondrial health see worsening symptoms even on really clean diets, and it's why I keep saying the mechanism matters so much. You can do everything "right" nutritionally and still be spinning your wheels if you haven't addressed the upstream stuff. → Read my recent article on estrogen dominance and light here
Your fascia, fat, and lymph aren’t passive....they are electrically active! Your Connective Tissue Is Bioelectric Here's the thing most people don't realize: your fascia, lymphatics, and fat tissue aren't just structural. They conduct energy, and they respond to things like redox potential, mitochondrial charge, circadian rhythm, and hormonal timing. Research by Pollack & Rubik (2002), show that water, collagen, and fascia actually store and conduct electrical charge and that they depend on electron flow and redox balance to do it well. So when your electron flow slows down, tissue can becomes fibrotic, painful, and resistant to change, and that's not a drainage problem. That's a charge problem, and that requires very different solutions.
Light Controls Your Lymph Your lymphatic rhythm is hugely signaled by your circadian rhythm, and your circadian rhythm is driven by light, so when your light environment is off, your lymph is off too. Scheiermann et al. (2012) showed that immune and lymphatic function are clock-timed, and Leproult et al. (1997) alongside Bass & Lazar (2016, Cell) linked poor morning light to impaired leptin signaling and a disrupted cortisol awakening response. What that actually looks like in the body is: sluggish lymphatic tone, reduced leptin signaling, and increased water retention and inflammation, and this is why women in disrupted light environments often deal with fluid retention even when their diet is perfect. Light is upstream of all of it, so if you're not starting there, you're essentially trying to fix the downstream symptoms while ignoring what's causing them. → Download MyCircadianApp and scroll to the bottom of the home screen for all the free in-app videos, articles, and guides on getting your circadian health on track. Low Charge = Fibrosis, Pain, and Fluid Retention When mitochondrial output is low, exclusion zone (EZ) water is also low, and that's when connective tissue really starts to break down. Collagen synthesis slows, the extracellular matrix becomes stiffer, fibroblasts become dysfunctional, and capillary and lymphatic drainage gets impaired, and Misra et al. (2022) and Sun et al. (2020) both show this direct link between mitochondrial dysfunction and fibrotic fat tissue. So if your protocol doesn't support rebuilding mitochondrial charge and exclusion zone water, you're not solving the root issue, you're just managing the downstream effects and wondering why nothing is sticking.
You Can't Drain What Isn't ChargedStandard lipedema protocols focus on “moving lymph", but lymph doesn’t flow on its own. Lymph needs charge - including: Sunlight (Infrared, Red & UV) on the skin in personalized amounts Grounding Strategic cold exposure when/if the body is ready Seasonal & Daily rhythm with food & light A diet that helps lower inflammation & re-establish leptin signaling These are foundational for rebuilding a coherent bioelectric field. This is the type of personalized protocol we build for you inside of Blueprint (come to our free info session here) & Exactly what I lay out in the 21 Day Leptin Reset (click here for Tax Day Discount) Pollack found that light charges water inside tissues, Watanabe et al. (2006) linked cold exposure to mitochondrial uncoupling, and Cordero et al. (2021) highlighted redox's role in lymphatic performance specifically. These are foundations, not "nice to haves".
Sunlight on Skin = Bioelectric Charge This is the one I hear the least about in lipedema spaces and it's so important. Your skin isn't just a barrier, it's actually more like a solar panel that is directly charging the tissues underneath it, and sunlight (especially red, infrared, and UVA) does some really significant things at the tissue level. Wong-Riley et al. (2005) showed it stimulates ATP production in subcutaneous mitochondria Elvin et al. (2022) showed improved collagen and elastin synthesis with light exposure Wacker & Holick (2013) showed UV activates alpha-MSH (a neuropeptide that regulates appetite, inflammation, and fat metabolism) Rittié (2022) showed it lowers TGF-β, a cytokine directly involved in fibrosis. No supplement can replicate what direct sunlight does to your tissue at this level. Here's the thing I feel like I have to say out loud: most women with cellulite or lipedema are covering their legs, and I completely understand it because I did it too for years. However - losing that fear was genuinely a huge part of my own healing process. Getting your legs in direct sunlight, starting at sunrise for that red and infrared exposure, is one of the most foundational things you can do and it costs nothing. Use MyCircadianApp to guide your sunlight exposure & do it safely (save 50% off lifetime access during Tax Day to Earth day). This is especially important for practitioners: If you’re still treating lipedema with keto + lymph - but ignoring light, redox, circadian repair, and quantum biology - you’re missing the mitochondrial foundation. There is no sustainable fat loss or tissue repair without restoring charge and timing. What to Do Next:Most lipedema and cellulite advice skips the foundations, but no drainage protocol, supplement stack, or compression gear can fix a body that’s lost its charge. To rebuild from the root, you need to:
